This is a 30s long indefinitely looped animation of a partition of the demolished Heygate estate facade with a light flickering in 1 of 30 visible rooms. Through this artwork Anta is questioning if enough is being done to fill the vacuum left by decreasing amount of social housing in London.
The Heygate Estate was built to offer affordable housing and provided about 1200 socially rented flats and housed about 3000 people. The redevelopment is meant to contain 2500 units 74 of which will be socially rentable. This represents only 3% of the new homes.
Having lived near the Heygate estate between 2012 and 2016 the artist witnessed the distress and activities by local community questioning the redevelopment of the area. The main concerns were the displacement of people and a fear that the new housing wont be affordable.
